Digital Careers Expo big hit with Auckland students

Date: December 02, 2009

96% of survey respondants say they would recommend the event!

The Digital Careers Expo www.digitalcareers.co.nz is an afternoon of FREE fun and informative seminars and discussions with industry and government experts to help domestic and international students make career and study choices linked with the needs of the Digital sector.

We already know that ICT and "digital" workers will be the backbone of New Zealand’s return to productivity post recession – this event is focused on helping students establish pathways from education to work and be part of building that productivity.

What's a "Digital Career"?

We think that it's anything from Systems Management to Software Engineering, Web Design to Network Engineering, Business Analysis to Games development - plus a whole lot more!

Seminars held included:

  • Practical career planning advice and information
  • Ways to find work
  • The value of networking
  • Tips and tricks for being a great employee
  • Information on DoL Immigration's work and residency options
  • What Employers want
  • Understanding what employers are looking for in a job applicant
  • What are the jobs of the future going to be?

The Digital Careers Expos took place in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in October and November with great results:

  • "Respondents to DoL’s survey of Auckland Expo attendees rated the event very highly - so we know we are hitting the mark", said Accelerating Aotearoa's Judy Speight.
  • Around 70 of the 180 attendees at the Auckland event responded to the survey with the following results:
    • Seminar 1: "Career Management & effective work habits". (By Career Services) – rated by 96% as useful to very useful
    • Seminar 2: "Work & Residence Options" (by DoL Immigration) rated by 91% as useful to very useful
    • Seminar 3: "What Employers want" (by Kordia and NZICT Group) rated by 85% as useful to very useful
    • 96% respondents advised they would recommend the event to other students if run next year!

The project is a partnership between Accelerating Aotearoa and DoL Immigration with support from Career Services, Auckland City Council, Grow Wellington, Canterbury Development Corporation, CPIT and NZICT Group.

Plans for the 2010 event are already underway - watch this space for details!
